Rapid Restoration of the Required Maximum Accuracy after Robot Damage

At a renowned sports car manufacturer, robot damage caused an automated production installation for carbon components to shut down.

Highly accurate robot calibration was required to return the installation to precise and reliable operation.

Case Study

At a renowned sports car manufacturer, robot damage caused an automated production installation for carbon components to shut down. The installation performed complex finishing processes such as milling, drilling and trimming.

After a collision, the original precision paths no longer matched the actual robot trajectories. Production came to a complete standstill. Attempts to restart the installation over several weeks were unsuccessful.

After installation of the ISIOS recalibration system, both the robot and the fixtures or positioning system were measured again. The actual geometric deviations were determined precisely and compensated mathematically. In this case, absolute accuracy was improved to approximately 0.15 mm.

The installation could resume productive operation immediately after calibration was completed. In the event of future damage or deformation that does not prevent the robot from functioning, wear or component replacement during maintenance, production can now resume within 20 to 30 minutes with the same precision. In this case, greater precision was achieved than before the failure. The improved absolute accuracy enabled additional machining processes and reduced dependence on expensive CNC machines.
